Line 6

Construction on Line 6 started in 1994. Despite its numbering, it was the last line in the SMRT to open for service. It connects the outskirts of Seoul to relieve traffic on other lines. It does not cross the Han River. Its color is Ocher.

The line opened on August 7, 2000, when a short section of the line (Bonghwasan to Sangwolgok) opened for service. On December 15 of that year, the rest of the line between Sangwolgok and Eungam was opened. This would complete the line, but the opening of the section between Itaewon and Yaksu was delayed.

Note: this map of Line 6 is not up to date as it does not include Sinnae Station, an extension past Bonghwasan which opened in December 2019.

The Itaewon-Yaksu section opened on March 9, 2001, rendering the line fully operational.

In the following years after opening, several stations were added to the line:

  • August 3, 2001: Sindang Station opens, providing a transfer with Line 2.

  • December 21, 2005: Dongmyo Station opens, providing a transfer with Line 1.

  • December 21, 2019: Sinnae Station opens, becoming a new terminus and providing a transfer with the Gyeongchun Line. This completed the current Line 6.

All stations on the line feature screen doors.

Eastbound trains terminate at either Bonghwasan or Sinnae. Westbound trains, upon reaching Eungam, complete the "Eungam Loop," a one-way, counterclockwise loop consisting of five stations. Upon reaching Eungam again, it continues on to Bonghwasan or Sinnae. So, this line technically does not have a western terminus.

The current line is 36.4 km (22.6 mi) long. Except for Sinnae Station, the entire line runs underground.

All trains are stored in the Sinnae Depot.

All track is on the right-hand side.
