Gyeonggang Line

The Gyeonggang Line began construction in 2012. The line is planned to run from Incheon on the west coast to Wonju to the eastern province of Gangwon-do (-do in Korean means province). Its name is derived from Gyeonggi-do (which includes Seoul and Incheon) and Gangwon-do on the eastern coast of Korea.

It is marked a dark blue on maps, a color tone slightly lighter than the one used on Line 1.

A section of the line opened on September 24, 2016, from Pangyo to Yeoju. This section is a rebuilt section of the former Suryeo Line, a single-track, narrow gauge line from Suwon to Yeoju that closed in 1972.

Note: the full name of Yeongneung is Sejongdaewangneung. This translates to "royal tomb of King Sejong," which is nearby. King Sejong of Joseon was one of the most famous kings in Korean history ,and the creator of the Korean language.

A second section opened between Seowonju and Gangneung on December 22, 2017, in anticipation for the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This section of the line is run by KTX-Sancheon trains, and can go to and from Seoul through the Jungang Line. This section is not yet considered to be part of the Seoul Metro network, but will be when the rest of the line is finished.

A small branch line providing connection to the Yeongdong Line opened on March 2, 2020, with trains running from Gangneung to Anin. This completed the current line.

All trains run between Pangyo and Yeoju.

The current line is 53.8 km (33.4 mi) long, excluding the section served by KTX-Sancheon. All track is on the left-hand side.

There is a single depot at Bubal.

The line is planned to be extended west from Pangyo to Songdo. This section would share track with the Suin Line from Wolgot to Songdo. Construction will start in 2021 and is expected to be finished by 2027.

The section from Yeoju to Seowonju will open in 2023.
