Line 4

Construction on Line 4 started in 1980, along with its sister line, Line 3. It is a long line crossing the Seoul National Capital Area from the southwest to the northeast. It originally ran from Sanggye to Sadang. Its color is light blue. 

The line opened on April 20, 1985, from Sanggye to Samseon-gyo.

On October 18, 1985, the rest of the line from Samson-gyo to Sadang opened.

On April 21, 1993, the line was extended one station northward from Sanggye to Danggogae.

On April 1, 1994, the Gwacheon Line (Seonbawi to Beomgye) opened, with Namtaeryeong opening as an in-fill station.

On April 30, 2003, the Ansan Line (Geumjeong to Oido) was integrated from Line 1. Surisan Station between Sanbon and Daeyami was opened on July 18, completing the current Line 4.

All northbound trains terminate at Danggogae, except during nighttime when they short-turn at various stations. Half of the southbound trains terminate at Sadang, with the rest heading to either Ansan or Oido.

An express service is offered by Korail, only during rush hours on weekdays. It stops at all stations between Danggogae and Sanbon, then stops at Sangnoksu, Jungang, and all stations between Ansan and Oido.

All stations now feature screen doors.

The current line is 72.1 km (44.8 mi) long. It stretches well beyond the Seoul city limits, into nearby cities such as Siheung, Ansan, and Nowon.

 

All track south of Namtaeryeong is on the left-hand side of the track, since it is operated by Korail; the rest of the line is operated by Seoul Metro and runs on the right-hand side. Trains cross over at a junction between Namtaeryong and Seonbawi.

The line from Danggogae to Sadang is powered by 1500V DC voltage. Once trains pass Sadang, the voltage switches to 25000V AC.

There are two Korail depots on this line, at Ansan and Siheung. Ansan Depot is mainly used for light maintenance, while Siheung is used for heavy maintenance and permanent storage of trains. Siheung is also responsible for maintaining various other Korail trains.

Seoul Metro has a single depot at Chang-dong.

A four-station extension is currently being built past Danggogae into the city of Namyangju, called the Jinjeop Line. The stations will be Byeollae Byeolgaram (where a transfer to Line 8 will be available once that extension opens), Pungyang (tentative, subject to change), Onam, and Jinjeop. Construction started on December 10, 2014, with a planned opening date of December 31, 2021. Pungyang Station has a planned opening date of May 2023.
