Line 2

Line 2 was built from 1978 to 1984. It is a circular line with two branches, connecting the busiest parts of Seoul. The line running clockwise is referred to as the Inner Circle Line, and the line running counter-clockwise is referred to as the Outer Circle Line. Its color is green.

On October 31, 1980, the line officially opened to the public, with the opening of the Seongsu Branch (Sinseol-Dong to Seongsu) and a section of the main loop, from Seongsu to Sports Complex.

The rest of the line was gradually opened in sections until 1984:

  • December 23, 1982: Sports Complex to Seoul Nat'l Univ. of Education

  • September 16, 1983: Seongsu to Euljiro 1-ga (Euljiro Ipgu)

-The Seongsu Branch was officially designated as a separate branch at this date.

  • December 17, 1983: Seoul Nat'l Univ. of Education to Seoul Nat'l University

  • May 22, 1984: Seoul Nat'l University to Euljiro 1-ga via Sindorim, completing the entire main loop.

On May 22, 1992, the Sinjeong Branch opened, with trains branching off at Sindorim to Yangcheon-gu Office. It was extended to Sinjeongnegeori on February 29, 1996 and finally to Kkachisan on March 20, of that same year .

The Dangsan Railway Bridge between Dangsan and Hapjeong was closed in 1996, and the old steel girder bridge was replaced with a 1.3 km (0.81 mi) concrete bridge. The new bridge opened on November 22, 1999.

On October 20, 2005, Yongdu Station opened on the Seongsu Branch, between Sindap and Sinseol-Dong. This completed the current Line 2. It was the first station on the line to feature screen doors. By 2008, all stations on Line 2 were fitted with screen doors.

The line today covers 60.2 km (37.4 mi) of track (47.7 km for the main loop, 5.4 km for the Seongsu Branch, and 6 km for the Sinjeong Branch). As it is owned by Seoul Metro, this line runs on the right-hand side of the track.

This is the most heavily used line in the entire system. Trains originate and end at either City Hall, Seongsu, or Sindorim. Some trains do not complete a full loop, stopping short at various stations.

There are two depots on the line, at Gunja and Sinjeong.

A possible extension would extend the Sinjeong Branch to Gayang on Line 9. This would include a new station called Gangseo-gu Office between Kkachisan and Gayang.
